TWB Tasting Notes:
Nose: The nose opens with an enticing interplay of classic Islay peat smoke, briny sea air, and medicinal notes, immediately followed by a sweet undertone from the Rivesaltes cask. Aromas of dried apricots, golden raisins, and honey blend beautifully with hints of caramelized sugar and a delicate touch of almond. The peat and sweetness create a balanced and inviting bouquet, with a subtle backdrop of vanilla and spiced orange.
Palate: On the palate, this whisky is a harmonious fusion of smoky and sweet elements. The robust peat smoke is the first to hit, accompanied by a maritime saltiness that is characteristic of Caol Ila. This is quickly followed by the sweet, rich flavors imparted by the Rivesaltes cask—think ripe orchard fruits, dried sultanas, and spiced orange peel. The sweetness is beautifully integrated, softening the intensity of the peat, while layers of toffee, almond, and a hint of vanilla add complexity and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel.
Finish: The finish is long, warming, and satisfying, with the peat smoke lingering pleasantly alongside notes of dried fruits and a gentle, spiced sweetness. The final moments are marked by a subtle almond nuttiness and a whisper of oak, leaving a lasting impression of smoky richness tempered by the soft influence of the Rivesaltes cask.
