Littlemill Distillery
Founded in 1772, the historic Littlemill Distillery was strategically located west of Bowling on the north shore of the River Clyde, along the main road into Glasgow, making it a central figure in Scotland’s whisky production. In the 1930s, Littlemill underwent significant upgrades, introducing innovative features such as double ventilation towers over a single drying kiln and pot stills with rectifiers instead of traditional swan necks. This unique combination of pot and column stills was designed to produce malt whisky with faster maturation, enhancing both efficiency and quality. Renowned as the oldest working malt whisky distillery in Scotland until its closure in 1992, Littlemill played a pivotal role in the evolution of Scottish whisky heritage. Although the distillery was permanently closed and demolished in 2006, leaving only the shell of the manager’s house, the legacy of Littlemill Distillery endures among whisky enthusiasts and historians. Today, Littlemill remains a revered name, symbolizing the enduring craftsmanship and innovation that continue to define Scotland’s rich whisky-making tradition.
