TWB 50 Year Old Invergordon | MacBean

We are delighted to present a brand new TWB exclusive Scotch whisky: Invergordon 'MacBean' 50 Year Year Old, 1972 vintage.

You may well be familiar with our TWB Apollo whisky series. Single cask whiskies featuring images and quotes from the historic Apollo missions which ultimately peaked with Neil Armstrong becoming the first human to set foot on the surface of the moon from Apollo 11. The subsequent mission, Apollo 12, saw Commander Charles Conrad and Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean become the third and fourth to explore the Moon. However, during this venture Alan Bean was hiding a wee secret. In recognition of his Scottish ancestry, he hid within his spacesuit as small swatch of Clan MacBean tartan. The tartan travelled with him to the moon's surface and back again to Earth. Today, a small part of this tartan is on display at the V&A museum in Dundee, Scotland as part of an exhibition celebrating and exploring this most famous Scottish textile.

So, here at TheWhiskyBarrel.com we felt this a perfect opportunity to further celebrate all things Scotch, tartan and moon! We are delighted to present a TWB exclusive Invergordon 50 year old 1972 vintage single cask. Matured in a single barrel from December 1972 for fifty years before we bottled this up in September 2023. Being fifty years old, the output is relatively low, with only 128 bottles at 42.9%abv. Having a little bit of fun with the label we have rendered Alan Bean on the moons surface in a bespoke Clan MacBean tartan suit. Aye! Sadly, like many of the Apollo astronauts, Alan Bean passed away in 2018 after crafting a successful second career as a painter, with a focus on his eye for the lunar surface as one of very few people to have experience that landscape and feeling. The legacies of all the Apollo astronauts continue to inspire to this day.

Whisky of this vintage is becoming harder and harder to find. Single grain whisky (different to single malt which must be barley grain) like this one distilled at Invergordon Distillery, can be much more accessible. At£395/us$400 it offers excellent value for vintage aged FIFTY years. And being single grain does not in any way compromising on quality. Singel grain whisky are the key ingredient of many blended whisky for their reliable and distinct character. A singel cask option allows exploration of this often 'unseen' whisky. Selected from our very own inventory of casks of Scotch whisky, we've been keeping a watchful eye, and taste, on this one as it approached its significant birthday. Packed with autumnal spices, dried mango, coconut and milk chocolate, if you can get over the awe of age, this is a very easily enjoyable dram of Scotch whisky.

Given the age and special nature of the whisky, we also felt it was worthwhile being give a little extra presentation. In a similar vain to our Caol Ila 11 year old celebrating the monumental Saturn V rocket that powered the Apollo missions, we have tweaked the bespoke, hand made wooden stand, made from old whisky casks, to accommodate this new Invergordon 50 year old MacBean whisky. Both the bottles and stands are individually numbered from 1 to 128. Available exclusively at TheWhiskyBarrel.com this is a sure first whisky to stand out in your collection for a number of reasons.
